A breath of fresh air to keep the fishing industry in Georgia.
With 4 million visitors per year and 1,300 hectares, Stone Mountain Park is Georgia’s most visited attraction. Discovered by the natives more than 9000 years ago, this park contains the largest open-air granite area in the world and a huge sculpture on its side… Discovery of this green space that will delight Georgians as much as tourists.
A great breath of fresh air
Stone Mountain Park is open all year round to children and parents looking for fresh air. The park itself surrounds Stone Mountain, 514 metres high.
Engraved in the rock
The mountain is best known for its sculptures made of granite. The 3 Confederate Civil War heroes on their horses, President Jefferson Davis, and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson are frozen in it. This gigantic sculpture, perched 120 m above the ground, is a low relief larger than a football field. The project was initiated in 1915, but the last finishing touches were made in 1972. The sculpture is colossal, even more so when faced; it is even said that workers could find refuge in the ear or mouth of one of the horses in case of rain…
With more than 1,300 hectares of green space, many activities and as many events, it’s hard not to find something to do at Stone Mountain Park.
You can play golf (two courses), plant your club to the top of the mountain (1600 metres of climbing), or even throw your line into the 147-hectare lake.
For lunch break, you have the choice: unpack your picnic in one of the two areas, or sit at one of the cafeterias or restaurants.
Day and night
Did the park seduce you during the day? Well, stay there at night!
For adventurers (on Sundays) who dream of sleeping in the park… but under the duvet, it is possible to book a room in one of the two Marriott hotels located inside the park. The Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort or the Marriott Stone Mountain Inn promise their visitors a (relatively) natural getaway.
The scavengers will have to choose from among the 431 campsites scattered throughout the park, to sleep under the stars. There is something for everyone: 202 are fully equipped for motorhomes, with water, electricity and sewers; 191 are partially equipped for motorhomes, mobile homes and tents, with water and electricity; and 56 sites are more primitive, with just one space to pitch a tent. Scout one day, always scout!
It is not necessary to book your pitch, but it is strongly recommended; to do so, call 770 498 5710 or the toll-free number 1 800 385 9807. More information and special offers on the official website http://www.StoneMountainPark.com/lodging-camping.
In addition to being a natural park where it is good to do nothing, Stone Moutain Park offers many activities, especially for children.
If you want to get some height (effortlessly), head for Summit Skyride. Its “Swiss Cable Car” cable car offers a breathtaking view of the park, Atlanta, the Appalachian Mountains and up to 100 km away. Those who are afraid of heights will simply wait downstairs, because these small cable cars carry hearts well attached to them at an altitude of some 250 metres.
Climbing and hiking enthusiasts will find pretty routes at SkyHike with suspension bridges where you can move from one wooden batten to the other, passages where you can swing while holding on to the ropes, nets on which you can climb, 3 metres for beginners, 7 metres for daredevils, and 12 metres for real hot heads.
Children under 16 years of age must be under the supervision of an adult. You must be over 1m15 tall and weigh a maximum of 114kg (!) to use the climbing wall, and over 1m12 and 137kg maximum for the Skyhike.
Before you leave, discover the Geyser Towers, a unique attraction that opened in 2012. The principle: a route made of rope bridges, net tunnels and all kinds of obstacles, bring the adventurous to a geyser that gushes out of the ground. We come away delighted – but soaked.
Lasershow Spectacular in Mountainvision
And finally, the flagship attraction of Stone Park Mountain: the Lasershow Spectacular in Mountainvision. It is a multi-dimensional experience on the world’s largest outdoor display: the majestic Stone Mountain, which has been in the park for over 27 years, takes place on sunny days (April-October) and has already been seen by more than 25 million people. Great American-style show!
